Yonah Freemark

Yonah Freemark is Principal Research Associate in the Metropolitan Housing and Communities Policy Center at the Urban Institute, where he leads the practice area on Fair Housing, Land Use, and Transportation. He evaluates how governments, working within multi-level systems of authority, shape transportation, housing, and land use policies; he explores both who wins and gains—and best practices to achieve better outcomes. The work is comparative by instinct, frequently setting the United States against France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, and empirical in method, built on original datasets, geospatial analysis, and quantitative causal inference. He has published scholarship in the Journal of the American Planning Association, Urban Studies, Housing Policy Debate, Urban Affairs Review, and more. He has also written widely in the press, including for CNN, The New York Times, Planning, CityLab, and Next City, and founded the national website The Transport Politic. He has testified before elected bodies including the Canadian Parliament and the Washington State Legislature. He holds a PhD in Urban Studies from MIT.
